Don’t Judge the Cover
(An Ode to MJ)
You became a supernova
Who shinned brighter than any
other
For years you commanded the
world’s attention
Like no other
You dined with Kings and Queens
and Heads of State
But never been too impressed
You chose to keep company with
those
Who shared your sense of fun and
your water gun
Born a star on Jackson street
You danced to your own beat
Danced till the start of dawn
Shy and sweet
You’d say don’t judge me, but love
me
Don’t judge the cover
A thriller like no other
So eagerly upon the news they wait
You’re a public person, they said
You live your life in headlines,
for God’s sake
Did they ever know your nature or
your soul?
Did they ever know your dreams or
silent screams?
Media spoke with cunning false
pretense
To sell another paper at your
expense
Celebrated by adoring crowds
That even you couldn’t count
Cause the numbers were so great
But your greatest role came in a
form of being the best father
In the summer of 2009
Your light was cut by another
A drip from a needle passed into
your restless veins
He says, sleep on, and so you
sleep, and do not wake
Foolish advice he gave to you
indeed
Each to each has pledged his faith
As the early morning hours passed,
why couldn’t he keep watch?
A bright light has faded, and
darkness falls like night
Born a star on Jackson street
You danced to your own beat
Danced till the start of dawn
Shy and sweet
You’d say don’t judge me, but love
me
Don’t judge the cover
As your life glittered in the
light
Now you silently lay in state
Adorned with flowers
Bejeweled crystal glove and golden
belt
In love they kissed each other
upon the cheek
With tears and sorrow in their
eyes
Come what may, come what might
Like you, there will never be
another
Lucky are the few, who really knew
you
Who you called friends and brother
I truly wished I was counted one
among them
But that’s Okay
I still enjoyed your brilliance
through your song and dance
Out of this prison, I need to
break free
I ask the God of love to ease my
pain
From tears I can not refrain
And so in love I say good bye to
you
You were, and so are, more loved
then you will ever know
May you finally rest in peace
And keep company with the Prince
of Peace.
Born a star on Jackson street, you
danced to your own beat
Born a star on Jackson street, you
will always be remembered for the moonwalk and your magic feet
You will always be remembered for
the moonwalk and your magic feet
And thank you for teaching me
To never judge the cover!
